The travel bug got me, truly. Our trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico, looked picture-perfect, but it ended up raining 90% of the time. Now, I’m ready for a “travel rematch.” Plus, I miss the airport, being in the clouds, and that unmatched feeling of adventure on a plane.
For me, half the thrill is the buildup to the trip. Since that was my first plane ride and my first international journey, I learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. For our next adventure, I’m taking along some travel essentials I picked up after that first experience. Maybe you’ll find something here to add to your own list.
A cup holder for our suitcases
I noticed some suitcases have built-in cupholders, which are incredibly handy. But if yours doesn’t, a cupholder attachment can do the trick. It slides right onto the suitcase handle, giving you a spot to rest your Starbucks or water bottle after security. One less thing to juggle as you make your way to the gate.
A vanity bag hanger
One thing I learned about myself as a traveller is that my need for organization follows me around the world. I like to keep things tidy, even in a hotel bathroom. The last trip, my skincare, makeup, and hair tools covered the whole counter (and it was a big counter). This time, I picked up a vanity bag hanger to keep things off the surface, more hygienic, and a lot easier to find. After watching a YouTube recommendation, I was totally influenced—and ready to be more organized.
Squeezable travel containers
I brought typical travel-size bottles last time, but they took up more space than expected. So, I’m trying squeezable travel cubes that compact as they empty. They’re perfect for skincare, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, without taking over my suitcase.
Packing cubes
I already use packing cubes, but if you haven’t tried them, they’re fantastic. They kept me organized and surprisingly, we packed everything into two carry-ons and two personal bags.
A new traveller’s knapsack
Last trip, I managed to fit everything into a personal bag and carry-on, but it was tight. The bag was already fraying before we left, and it barely fit everything in an organized way. So, I picked up a travel knapsack that’s like a mini suitcase with packing cube slots, a charger, and a shoe and laptop compartment. I’m excited to try this one next time.
More travel ID tags
While we had ID tags on our carry-ons, we didn’t have any on our personal bags. Maybe it’s overkill, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. For the next trip, I’ve got ID tags for everything.
Vitamin organizer
Last time, I tossed vitamins into a ziplock bag, but they ended up mixed together. The vitamin D powder dusted the magnesium and ashwagandha gummies, so I picked up an organizer to keep them separate and avoid any powdery mess.
Mesh laundry bag
I wished I had a better system for separating dirty laundry. Mesh bags are perfect not only for delicates but also for keeping clean and dirty laundry apart. I’ll be adding one for next time to make unpacking a little easier.
Makeup brush holders
To keep my brushes and sponges from leaving residue everywhere, I got a makeup sponge holder and brush case. I’ve been eyeing an automatic makeup brush cleaner too for even easier upkeep—maybe someday!
Travel rings
We tried silicone rings on the last trip, but my husband’s was a little snug, so I sized up for him. I’ll definitely keep these travel rings around to keep our wedding bands safe when we’re on the go.
Leakproof container covers
For my liquid containers, I grabbed some silicone leakproof covers. They’re perfect for adding an extra seal on anything that might leak. This way, I can avoid spills without overpacking the liquids.
Luggage strap for Disney
For our future Disney trip, I picked up a luggage strap to hold my park ears. I read about this tip online, and it’s a brilliant way to keep accessories secure when I don’t want to wear them. After binge-watching Disney World videos for weeks, this feels like the most practical tip yet.
Rain ponchos
If Riviera Maya taught us anything, it’s to be ready for rain. So I picked up two ponchos for our next trip. For Disney, where rain seems to surprise everyone, I won’t have to worry about paying a premium for one in the park.
