preschool years

I loved being creative. Truly. I was fully invested in the YMCA/ABC mashup song with dance choreography that my graduating kindergarten class spent weeks practicing. And yes, kindergartners have graduations too.

Too lazy to play sports in elementary school and too clumsy to dance, I sewed clothes for my Barbies and created stories and worlds for them on my bedroom floor.

When I wasn’t making up stories, I was certainly watching them. Trollz, Shark Boy & Lava Girl, and Winx Club were some of my favorites. The characters from the first two shows were so captivating that I would often role-play them on the playground during recess with my classmates.

And when I wasn’t watching TV shows, I was watching martial arts movies from the ’60s to ’80s with my mom in our living room. Despite the tacky sound effects and even tackier blood spurting from defeated enemies, I wasn’t put off by the poor production quality of these martial arts films. The stories about the heroes in these films kept me hooked, and I ended up watching 50 martial arts flicks from ages 7 to 9.

latter elementary years

I’ll never forget when I was 9 because I found my new favorite television show, one that made me ditch the Barbies, bears, and martial arts movies: Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I never knew I could love something so much! I couldn’t talk about it in class because the teacher would call me disruptive. However, I also couldn’t figure out how to explain why I loved my new favorite show until one fateful summer.

middle school years

Enter, a Windows Vista computer. This computer was the first in my house that wasn’t ugly, didn’t require dial-up internet, and didn’t have a floppy disk drive. It was wonderful. With faster internet, an LCD screen, and access to YouTube and Windows Movie Maker, I could finally express myself.

In 2007, I discovered Avatar fansites, forums, chat rooms, and AMVs. I thought, why don’t I make my own fansite? And so I did. During that not-so-lazy summer before middle school, I learned WordPress, Photoshop, HTML, CSS, and PHP.

After getting my own website, I started blogging. Once I had access to Windows Movie Maker, I started editing videos.

present

Flash forward to today, I’ve made a career out of video editing, photography, and multimedia creation. When I’m not doing that, I’m blogging and making tweaks to my website, trying to keep that younger, curious part of me alive.

Ironically, my lazy childhood self who didn’t play sports decided to pursue an interest in martial arts and is now a black belt. As for being too clumsy for ballet? That’s still true, but I found a way to balance on figure skates and explore that as a hobby too.
