Poutine is a Canadian classic. But in Montréal, it feels like a whole new experience. Everywhere you look, there’s poutine. From restaurants like Patati Patata to souvenir magnets, it’s a city that loves its poutine. But not every poutine is created equal.
A trip down memory lane with poutine
One of my favourite poutines is from my middle school cafeteria. The fries were thin and crispy. The gravy was perfect. It was simple, but so good. Back then, poutine was just a few dollars— a luxury for a middle schooler. And yes, I put ketchup on it. I know, some people think it’s a crime, but to me, it’s the only way.
Poutine experiences: from Smoke’s to fast food
I’ve tried a lot of poutine. I don’t like Smoke’s Poutinerie. The fries were soggy, and it didn’t taste fresh. I’ve also had poutine from places that claimed to make the best. But their thick fries and heavy gravy were a turn-off. Even the fast food versions, like McDonald’s and Pizza Pizza, had their moments. I used to grab Pizza Pizza poutine every week after my shift at Hot Topic.
Our poutine hunt in Montréal
When we went to Montréal, eating poutine was a priority. My husband had already tried La Banquise. It’s famous, but he wasn’t impressed. The lines were always long, and the portions were huge. Not what I was looking for.
Across the street, we found Ma Poule Mouillée. This place specializes in Portuguese chicken, but they put the chicken on poutine. It sounded interesting, so we gave it a try. The first few bites were good, but then I grew tired of it. The cheese curds didn’t have the signature squeak, and the poutine didn’t feel balanced.
Why Patati Patata Friterie de Luxe is the best poutine in Montréal
Our first stop for poutine in Montréal was Patati Patata Friterie de Luxe. It’s a local favourite, recommended by r/Montreal.
Now, I see why. They keep it simple— classic fries, gravy, and cheese curds. No fancy extras. Just the basics, done perfectly.
The cheese curds were fresh. And yes, they squeaked! The fries were crispy, and the gravy was rich. Every bite was delicious. I added ketchup, of course, and it was even better. I couldn’t stop eating.
Returning for more at Patati Patata Friterie de Luxe
We loved it so much, we went back on our last day. We shared a poutine as a snack on the drive home. Next time, I want to dine in. The restaurant is tiny, and it was fully booked when we went. I’ll call ahead next time. The food was too good to pass up.
Final thoughts: Patati Patata is a must-try
If you’re in Montreal, don’t miss Patati Patata Friterie de Luxe. The poutine is incredible. Fresh cheese curds, crispy fries, and flavourful gravy. It’s the best poutine I’ve ever had. Trust me, you need to try it.
