Edill’s Coffee House Scarborough review: come for the coffee, stay for the two unforgettable sandwiches

If you are exploring cafés in Scarborough, one place that tends to come up fairly quickly is Edill’s Coffee House. It is one of the larger cafés in the area and people seem to know it well.

I have actually been going to Edill’s Coffee House for over a year now. It was one of the first cafés I discovered when I started spending more time in the east end of Toronto.

For a while it became a regular stop for me. The kind of place where you walk in already thinking about what you might order.

I have not been recently because of something that personally put me off the experience a little. I am not going to get into details though, because every café can have the occasional off day.

Instead, I want to give an honest overview of what the café does really well. And where it could use a little improvement.

A huge café with two different zones

One thing Scarborough cafés often have going for them is space. Edill’s Coffee House definitely has plenty of that.

The café is massive. When you walk in, it almost feels like the seating just keeps going.

The interior is divided into two sections. One side is for laptops and working.

The other side is meant for chatting and relaxing. Laptops are not allowed there, although tablets like iPads are usually fine.

In theory, this system works very well. In practice, the laptop section fills up quickly.

Once people claim those seats, they tend to stay for a while. If you arrive later in the day, finding a spot can become a small mission.

Personally, I think cafés should consider gentle time limits when things get busy. Something like 90 minutes to two hours would feel fair.

It gives people time to work. And it also lets others enjoy the space.

The pastry situation

Edill’s Coffee House has a surprisingly large food menu. There are pastries, sandwiches, and breakfast items.

The first pastry I tried there was the almond croissant. I actually ordered it twice when I first started visiting.

The flavour was interesting. Unfortunately the texture was very dry.

Croissants should be flaky and airy. This one felt a bit flat and required more chewing than expected.

It is quite large though. But personally I would probably skip it next time.

The first unforgettable sandwich

Now let’s talk about the first star of the menu.

The pastrami sandwich at Edill’s Coffee House is genuinely fantastic. I ordered it once with my cousin and immediately understood why people talk about it.

It is just pastrami and mustard. Nothing complicated.

But the balance is perfect. I took one bite and paused for a second because it was that good.

You know those moments where food surprises you a little. That was one of them.

I liked it so much that I eventually learned how to recreate something similar at home. Mostly because constantly driving across the city for a sandwich felt slightly dramatic.

If you visit Edill’s Coffee House, this is the item I would recommend first.

The second unforgettable sandwich

The second standout item is the pastrami egg breakfast sandwich.

For a while I had a full hyper-fixation on this thing. There were mornings where I stopped by specifically for it before starting my day.

The eggs are soft and rich. The pastrami adds that salty depth that makes everything better.

And the whole thing sits inside a buttery brioche bun. It is simple, but extremely satisfying.

Honestly, I could easily see myself ordering it again.

My thoughts on the matcha

Now we get to the drinks.

The first matcha I tried there was their Biscoff matcha. It sounded interesting because you do not see that combination very often.

It was enjoyable enough that I came back again. But after trying several matcha drinks there, including strawberry matcha, I started noticing something.

The matcha flavour tasted a little unusual. It did not have the earthy, grassy profile that good matcha usually has.

Instead it reminded me of those pre-sweetened matcha mixes. The kind that contain only a small amount of real matcha powder.

After visiting Uji in Japan and learning more about matcha production, it became much easier to recognize the difference. Once you taste high quality matcha, your brain starts noticing things.

The drinks are still sweet and enjoyable for some people. But if you are looking for strong traditional matcha flavour, you may notice the difference.

The coffee is excellent

Interestingly, the café does something else extremely well.

Coffee.

Edill’s Coffee House roasts their beans in house. You can genuinely taste the freshness in their drinks.

The coffee is strong and rich. Even as someone who is not primarily a coffee person, I noticed the difference immediately.

This is clearly one of the café’s strongest points.

Is Edill’s Coffee House worth visiting?

Overall, this Edill’s Coffee House Scarborough review is a bit mixed but still positive.

The space is large. The coffee is excellent.

And the food menu has two real standouts: the pastrami sandwich and the pastrami egg breakfast sandwich.

Just know what you are going for. If you love coffee and want a spacious café environment, you will probably enjoy it.

If you are specifically searching for strong matcha, there may be better spots in the city.
