It’s been far too long since I’ve written a convention recap, but today I’m diving back in with Fan Expo Canada 2024, my most recent and most memorable experience. Fan Expo Canada 2024 had it all—cosplay, panels, artist alleys, and the energy of passionate fans.
If you don’t know, my first-ever convention was Fan Expo Canada in 2012. Back then, I volunteered, donned my first cosplay (a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-inspired look with a Hot Topic backpack and mask), and even helped manage the autograph line for Stan Lee. Yes, the Stan Lee. It’s wild to think how far I’ve come since those early days.
This year felt like a full-circle moment. Not only did I cosplay at Fan Expo Canada 2024 for the first time since 2012, but I also co-hosted a panel dedicated to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Finally cosplaying at Fan Expo Canada
Despite attending Fan Expo every year, I rarely cosplayed there. The bustling crowds and sensory overload usually made me reconsider. But 2024 was the year I changed that, and I’m so glad I did.

My husband and I dressed as Zutara—Katara and Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. He was scar-less Zuko, and I was classic Katara. It felt amazing to embody one of my favourite OTPs (one true pairings) and to share that with so many other fans.

Driving downtown in my Totoro Honda Civic, we parked near Front Street West and headed straight to the Intercontinental Hotel to grab our media badges. This process was familiar, but this year felt extra special because I also picked up panelist badges for my co-panelists.

Hosting an Avatar: The Last Airbender panel
Fan Expo Canada 2024 marked my first time hosting a panel at this convention. Organizing an Avatar: The Last Airbender discussion with four friends was a dream come true.
If you’ve ever thought about hosting a fan panel, it’s easier than you might think. Simply submit your topic through the convention’s website. Even if you don’t have experience, partnering with seasoned co-panelists or starting with smaller cons can help you get your foot in the door.

Our panel room filled to capacity, with people even waiting outside for a chance to join. Seeing the love for Avatar and feeling the excitement in the room was incredible. While we didn’t get to the trivia segment due to time constraints, we’re already brainstorming ways to improve next year. Maybe an entire panel dedicated to trivia?
Exploring the artist alley
The artist alley is always a highlight of Fan Expo Canada for me, and in 2024, it didn’t disappoint. I spent a huge chunk of my time there on both days of the convention, wandering through the rows of incredible artwork, crafts, and unique finds.
There’s something magical about artist alleys. I think it stems from my childhood, growing up as the daughter of an artist. My mom used to sell her crafts at local art markets, and I’d tag along, absorbing the creative energy of those spaces. It’s no wonder I feel so at home in the artist alley, searching for treasures and supporting other creators.

This year, I finally picked up a license plate cover I had been eyeing since Fan Expo 2023. It now proudly decorates my Totoro Honda Civic! I also came across so many other stunning pieces—from prints to enamel pins to handcrafted jewellery. The level of creativity and effort that artists pour into their work never fails to amaze me.
Immersing myself in the vendor hall
I also dedicated a good amount of time to the vendor hall, both before and after the panel. The energy in that space is electric, with massive exhibits, interactive displays, and endless merchandise.

Some of the standout installations this year included the LEGO booth, where you could create your own builds, and the Bell Gaming area, which showcased esports at its finest. Toronto Film School also had an impressive setup that caught my eye.

Fan Expo’s vendor hall can feel overwhelming because there’s so much to see. Even with a plan, it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer number of booths and attractions. But that’s what makes it exciting—you never know what you’ll stumble upon.
Final thoughts on Fan Expo Canada 2024
Fan Expo Canada 2024 was unforgettable. From cosplaying Katara to hosting a packed Avatar: The Last Airbender panel, it felt like my most fulfilling convention yet.
Conventions like Fan Expo Canada offer a chance to connect with fandoms, discover new artists, and create lasting memories. Whether you’re a seasoned attendee or considering your first visit, I highly recommend experiencing the magic for yourself.
Until next time, Fan Expo. See you in 2025!
