After procrastinating for a while, I finally got updated career headshots. I was going to hire a photographer or photograph myself at home, but then, through the power of TikTok, I was reminded that Monography exists.
Monography is a self-portrait studio in Toronto where you can rent a room for 30 minutes and take unlimited pictures of yourself. All you have to do is walk inside, pose in front of a solid background, and click a remote.
Career Headshots
Since the remote is so big, I had trouble hiding it (hopefully they’ll get a smaller one in the future), but the pictures turned out nicely. One thing I don’t like is that the camera captures these photos with high saturation and shadows. If I’d gotten flat RAW pictures after the session, I could have edited them however I wanted.
I decided to work with a forest green look for my career headshots. I’m wearing a forest green blazer from Shein and a forest green turtleneck from UNIQLO. I got the earrings from Hot Topic and the watch from Apple. The eyeshadow palette is from the Avatar: The Last Airbender x Colour Pop collaboration from earlier this year.
Taekwondo Headshots
I only had 30 minutes, but I changed outfits twice. So I got some Taekwondo headshots. After getting my black belt, I thought I’d take some photos to showcase my progress, which can be used for future opportunities. The only thing I forgot was my actual black belt!
Social Headshots
Then I changed into the outfit I wore later that night, which was this Xiao hoodie from Paimon’s Boutique over a Tripp NYC dress and Ardene socks (which I don’t recommend). A staff member helped me switch from the light green backdrop to the pink backdrop.
Overall, I would recommend Monography in Toronto and I would come back again! Whether you're doing self-portraits or working with a photographer, my biggest tip is to never rely on the camera or the photographer to ensure you look good. Have a printout of pose ideas or pose ideas in mind. Make sure you have photo-ready makeup and don't expect Photoshop to make you look flawless. What makes your photos better is the preparation you do before a shoot.
