I can’t stress enough how critical it is to set goals for specific quarters of the year. I know people who never set goals. I don’t know how they accomplish anything or measure success, but I thrive on pursuing goals.
Reading The 12 Week Year helped me reframe my mindset to stop giving myself a year to accomplish something. Work on your goals for a quarter so you can move on to your next goals the following quarter.
Did I accomplish my goals for quarter 1?
In quarter 1, I tried to get healthier/be in better shape, but I didn’t see results because I wasn’t focused enough and made so many excuses. This is a top goal for quarter two, and I hope to see results.
Get my black stripe belt in Taekwondo
My journey to get my black belt has been long, which I will detail in a blog post once I get a black belt, but I finally got my black stripe which is 1 step closer to my ultimate goal. I’ve always had a deep respect for martial arts. Back in the day, it used to take 10 years to get a black belt in martial arts.
But, these days, people can acquire a black belt in 1-2 years at many martial arts clubs. I strongly disagree with this, but it is a business, and parents who force their kids into the art, expect that black belt as soon as possible for the $2k+ they pay a year to send their kid to class.
When I get my black belt it will have taken me 6 years, which is unusual these days. However, I know why it took so long. As an adult transitioning from college to work, it’s hard to start a hobby. It’s hard to juggle your hobbies, relationships, and career.
So, it took me a long time to find that balance and find the best place for me to grow and learn. But, I’m still gonna make it to the finish line, in the end, God’s willing.
Participate in a kid’s TV writing intensive
I did this! I was really excited to participate in this program, and it’s still ongoing until the end of May. I learned a lot about writing for kid’s TV, but I didn’t really feel immersed in the program the way I expected to.
It was a highlight to hear Domee Lee, the director of turning red, talk about how she pitched her idea to Pixar and the process of making Turning Red, and why it resonated with the executives when she pitched an idea that was extremely specific and personal to her own life story. I still haven’t seen the movie, but if you saw my Movies to Watch list, you know it’s on there.
Pay off my credit card debt
I did it, after a lot of sacrifices. I’m still not in a great place. The pandemic led me to do a lot of impulse spending which is out of character for me. In quarter 2, I’m going to cut down on impulse spending and start saving more aggressively.
When it comes to financial literacy, I finished We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers, but it didn’t help/inspire me to curb my poor spending habits, so now I’m reading Get Good with Money by Tiffany Aliche.
Get my G license
I got my G license, like, literally in the mail today. Phew! No more driving tests. Those tests were not great for someone as anxious about performing as me.
The theme for quarter two is to refresh & reset. My top priorities are health/fitness, preparing for my black belt test, starting rollerskating, spring cleaning, improving my grant writing skills, and being a conscious spender.
I'll check in with you in Quarter 3 to see how I'm doing with the goals above. Gambatte!
