Kyoto kimono rental review: why I’m so glad I did it

This Kyoto kimono rental review begins with a confession: I was not completely confident about doing it at first. I kept wondering whether I would feel awkward, whether it would suit me, and whether I would spend the whole time being painfully aware of myself.

There was also the bigger question sitting quietly in the background: would this feel like cultural appropriation. I went back and forth on it for a while, then eventually landed on the fact that kimono rental is such a common experience for visitors in Japan and something people genuinely seem to enjoy as a way of appreciating the clothing and the setting.

Why I chose Kyoto

You can do kimono rentals in a lot of places in Japan, and Tokyo has plenty of options near temples and popular sightseeing areas. Still, I really wanted to do ours in Kyoto because Kyoto already feels cinematic before you even put on the outfit.

The streets, the preserved buildings, and the general atmosphere make it feel like the right backdrop for something like this. I wanted photos that felt rooted in the city rather than just photos of me wearing something pretty in a random location.

Booking and getting there

I booked with Kimono Kawai at 291 Gionmachi Kitagawa, Futaba Gion Building, 3rd Floor in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto 605-0073. I discovered them through a Black TikTok creator and that made me feel much better going in. We reserved through Klook, which made the process simple and easy to sort out before the trip, but you can easily just book on their website.

Our appointment was for 9:00 a.m. on our first morning in Kyoto, which sounded ambitious in theory and slightly unhinged in practice. We had arrived from Tokyo the day before, slept like people who had fully run out of energy, and woke up late enough to abandon the idea of walking there.

We were staying at Cross Hotel Kyoto, and the concierge helped us call a taxi so we could make it on time. Miraculously, we did, and I would now like credit for being late while still technically being punctual.

Why the early time slot was worth it

When we arrived, we were the only people there. That alone made the whole experience feel calmer, because there was no crowd, no pressure, and no sense of being rushed through decisions.

A 9:00 a.m. slot also meant first pick of the kimono selection, which I would absolutely recommend if you care about choice. It is one of those small travel decisions that ends up making a big difference to how relaxed the rest of the day feels.

There were different packages available depending on the style you wanted. I chose the basic kimono package, but next time I would probably go for one of the fancier options with lace details because those were extremely pretty and very hard to ignore.

What to know before visiting

  • Book an early time slot if you want the best selection and a quieter experience.
  • Wear Uniqlo Heattech in colder months.
  • Add the hair styling if you want the full look to feel complete.

What I wore and how warm it actually was

Because it was cold, we planned ahead and wore Uniqlo Heattech layers underneath. That was the right choice, because I was deeply uninterested in suffering for aesthetics before 10:00 a.m.

I had genuinely expected to spend the day feeling chilly and a bit self-conscious. Instead, once everything was on properly, I was much more comfortable than I thought I would be.

They also let me add extra pieces to make the outfit feel more complete, including a little outer layer, a small purse, and other styling touches. Those details really helped the look feel finished rather than just dressed-up in a rushed way.

The hair styling was the thing that pulled it all together

I added the hair styling option for about $15, and for me it was completely worth it. You do not have to do it, but it made the entire look feel intentional in a way that I do not think I could have replicated on my own.

There were different hairstyle options to choose from, plus a selection of accessories, which was frankly dangerous for someone like me who loves cute little details. I picked the prettiest ones I could find and immediately wished I could bring them all home.

What stood out most to me was how smoothly the stylist handled my hair. I do not usually wear updos, so I was surprised by how much I liked the final result and how easy she made the process feel.

Tips

My Order

Basic kimono couple package through Klook was $66.75 CAD, plus the $15 CAD hair styling add-on. Next time: the premium lace kimono ($38.99 CAD).

Walking through Kyoto in kimono

Yasaka Shrine was right nearby, so that was one of our first stops. We wandered over, took photos, and asked another couple to snap a picture of us, which they very kindly did.

After that, we just kept walking. We moved through Gion, passed through one of those very iconic photo spots that looks even better in person, and leaned all the way into the atmosphere of the day.

That is when I stopped feeling shy and started actually enjoying myself. Once you are out there, you realise you are far from the only person doing this and the whole thing starts to feel much more natural.

We turned it into a full day

Originally, I thought we would wear the kimono for maybe an hour, take some nice photos, and then head back. Instead, we stayed out until around 5:00 p.m., which still surprises me because that was absolutely not the original plan.

We wandered into shops, looked at swords, and stopped for matcha at Gokago Matcha. We kept exploring the Kiyomizu area, admired beautiful fans in a stunning shop, and even stopped by the very traditional Starbucks.

The best part is that the kimono changed how the whole day felt. It turned an ordinary day of walking and shopping into something more memorable, without needing to force a perfect itinerary.

Yes, people will notice you

You are going to get attention, because you are dressed up and people will look. That said, it did not feel uncomfortable in the way I had feared, because so many other tourists were doing kimono rentals too.

At one point, some guys passed by and shouted that I looked like Barbie. I thought it was hilarious, my partner thought it was hilarious, and now “look like Barbie” has become one of our deeply unserious inside jokes.

My honest thoughts on doing a kimono rental in Kyoto

If you are shy about doing a kimono rental in Kyoto, I really do get it. I had all the same hesitation, and then ended up loving it far more than I expected to.

It gave me a greater appreciation for the beauty of kimono, from the wrapping to the colours to the overall craftsmanship of the look. It also made me feel more connected to the setting around me, which was exactly what I had hoped for when I chose Kyoto.

I also think that when done respectfully, it can feel like a genuine act of appreciation rather than something careless. Japanese culture is clearly something people take pride in, and that sense of care is part of what made the experience feel so meaningful to me.

Would I recommend Kimono Kawai

Yes, absolutely. My experience with Kimono Kawai was positive from start to finish, and based on my own visit, I would call it Black girl friendly without hesitation.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Affiliate DisclaimerExperience: 9/10. Nerves beforehand: unnecessary, but very real.

The booking was easy, the staff were lovely, the hair styling was worth it, and the location made it easy to step straight into one of the prettiest parts of Kyoto. I would 100 percent do it again, and next time I already know I am upgrading to one of the extra fancy kimono options because apparently I enjoy giving myself future plans.
